Rat control 101

Wondering what you can do to eliminate these rodents from causing damage or getting inside of your home? Follow the steps below to manage rats on your property.

Inspecting for rats can be easy by following these steps:

Looking for holes or bite marks on garbage containers

Looking for droppings

Shining a flash light when its dark as this is when rats come out

Managing your garbage:

Use a tight-fitting lid, along with a hard-plastic or metal can

Take your garbage out close to the pickup time

Make sure food is tightly sealed

Keeping the area clean and secure:

Sealing cracks and small holes

Putting screens on vents

De-cluttering your basement and yard

Close gaps under doors with rodent-resistant metal door sweeps.

For more tips, visit the City of Ottawa’s posting on Rat Control or the Capital Wildlife Control Website.
