Over the past few weeks, Ottawa has experienced some record setting winter weather. January’s snow set records not only for the amount of snow we received of 101.8 cm, but also for the amount of snow in such short times.
The snowfall has continued into February and a winter storm watch is currently in effect with 30-40cm of snow anticipated to fall starting mid-day Tuesday through end of day Wednesday.
This new snow will exacerbate the challenges that city crews are already experiencing with respect to snow removal, particularly on residential streets. While staff have been working around the clock to clear snow, remove ice, and cut back snow banks, there are still many streets that are difficult to navigate. Last week’s thaw and floods have left many streets with deep ruts and I have been working with staff to report these ice potholes through Service Ottawa. Unfortunately, the extreme cold we have been experiencing this week has hindered the ice removal process and significantly reduced the number of streets crews have been able to clear.
Over the next couple of days, I ask residents to exercise patience and drive with caution as crews work to clear snow across our city. To support efficient snow clearing operations, the City would like to encourage residents to keep streets clear of parked vehicles all day long and to help with clearing clogged catch basins when possible.
