International Women’s Day Breakfast: March 8, 2018

For the past 21 years, I have been honoured to host my annual International Women’s Day breakfast to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments and achievements of women across our city. It is an event that I always look forward to and one that means a great deal to me personally. As we draw closer to March 8, I have been reflecting a lot on why this event continues to be so important. With movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp happening worldwide, it is clear to me that now more than ever we need to press forward and progress gender parity and gender inclusiveness in our city.

My International Women’s Day Breakfast is an opportunity to empower women locally. I have been fortunate to have had many inspiring and accomplished women speak at my events. Each bringing a unique and powerful message. This year, I am honoured to have the renowned Dr. Cindy Blackstock as my keynote speaker.

Dr. Blackstock is a member of the Gitksan First Nation and has 25 years of social work experience in child protection and Indigenous children’s rights.  Her promotion of culturally based equity for First Nations children and families and engaging children in reconciliation has been recognized by the Nobel Women’s Initiative, the Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, Frontline Defenders and many others. She is a tireless ally and advocate for Indigenous children and peoples in Canada and is the Executive Director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada.

Dr. Blackstock embodies strength, perseverance, and determination. She is a widely sought after public speaker and I am thrilled that she will be joining us on March 8. Due to the popularity of this event, this year, it will be held at the beautiful Infinity Convention Centre located at the corner of Hunt Club Road and Gibford Dr. For event details, please contact my office at 613-580-2480 or by email at diane.deans@ottawa.ca
